It was not a pretty picture and the stakes were high: ignominious death or a chance for fame and fortune. Forced to fight for sport or die, the gladiators were those already facing death as prisoners and former slaves. Through interviews with historians, journalistic accounts, and reenactments, the documentary shows how there was little to lose, and sometimes much to gain. DVD.
