Tips For Teaching Foreign Languages One model is the ESA model. [Longman 1998] The three stages are engage, study, and activate. Engage: The teacher tries to catch the students' interest and capture their emotions to draw them in. This might be through a game, pictures, audio or video clips, stories, humor, etc. Study: During this phase the teacher will focus on language skills or information, and how it is constructed. It can vary from a focus on pronounciation of a particular sound or phonetic sequence, to the study of a verb tense and it's usage. Activate: This phase utilizes exercises and activities where the students use the language to communicate. At this time the focus is not on sentence construction as much as it is on simply using the language, applying the knowledge.
